My Name is DAZ...

Filed in: webdesign polo music manchester

...and this is my blog.

Now that I'm back in the swing of blogging regularly, I thought I'd do the obligatory introductory post.

I live and grew up in Manchester in the UK. By day, I teach maths at a local secondary school. By night (and in the school hols!) I like to relax with some of the following activities:

Sport

I love both watching and playing all kinds sport and really enjoying swimming and going to the gym. I'm the captain of the Manchester Sharks water polo club. Water polo is a great team sport that requires a high level of fitness and skill. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough of either last season and finished rock bottom of the league without a win to our name. Hopefully the coming season will see an improvement.

Music

I'm a big indie fan and especially love music from Manchester. My favourite bands include The Stone Roses, James, Joy Division, New Order, The Killers, REM, Kasabian, The Fratellis and Snow Patrol. Currently, I'm listening to Scouting for Girls and Mumm-ra. I'm also loving the music from a local Manchester group called (We Are) Performance. They are a great electro band, who should do really well if there is any justice in the world. Check out their single, Surrender.

Reading

I also enjoy reading a variety of different books. I've just finished Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel and am now reading Skulduggery Pleasant, which although it is a kids book is a fun, easy read. I usually put reviews on Amazon when I finish a book and I'm also planning on putting reviews in the sidebar here.

Web Design

I got into web design a few years ago when I built a few awful sites using tables for layout in an old version of Dreamweaver. Then I discovered CSS and it all started to make sense. This website is my latest work. I'm self-taught, mainly using loads of books and some brilliantly useful websites.

That's enough about me - for now at least. The next few posts will start to get more geeky as the focus moves onto web development.

Listening to

The Killers: Sam's Town

Sams Town by the Killers 5

A great follow up album to their debut, Hot Fuss. Stand out tracks are Read My Mind and Sams Town.

Relaxing Reading

Labrynth by Kate Mosse

Labrynth book cover 3

Good summer reading, very much in the mould of The Da Vinci Code (but better writing). Another search for the grail and another wierd and secretive religous group.

Geeky Reading

Bulletproof Web Design by Dan Cederholm

Bulletproof Web Design book cover 5

An essential book for any web designer. This shows you how to create common web layouts using standard based layouts and avoid tables. It looks great and is full of priceless info.
