Making Icon Themes

Filed in: icons design webdesign

In my last post I wrote about making Emerald themes for Linux. Since then I've been busy making an icon theme.

As I've mentioned before, the cool thing about Linux is that you can customise how it looks. One of the ways you can do this is by changing the icon theme. These icons appear in windows and menus on the desktop and from version 3 onwards, Firefox uses the system icons too. Here are three examples of using different icons:

This is the default icon theme that comes with Ubuntu - nice and orange.

Human Icon Theme

This is the default Gnome icon theme - functional, but a bit old-fashioned looking in my opinion.

This is the Nuove XT icon theme that is a sort of cross between Windows Vista and Mac OSX.

I've started to work on my own theme as I wanted something that was simple and modern looking. At first I called the theme Dazzl icons as the colour scheme was based on the one used in this site. It was later suggested by somebody that they looked icy, so the name was changed to ICE icons - you can see an example below.

These icons are open source and produced using the excellent Inkscape. The icons are available from Gnome-Look.

You can see the whole set of icons below. I think they will prove useful for web development too, as a number of these icons are needed frequently in sites.
